ADIOS (Automated Data Inquiry for Oil Spills) is a NOAA-developed modeling tool that provides rapid, science-based estimates of how crude oils and refined petroleum products change after a spill. Using a curated database of oil properties and basic environmental inputs such as wind, water temperature, and salinity, ADIOS forecasts weathering processes—including evaporation, dispersion, emulsification, and spreading—over the first hours to days of a response. It outputs time series, plots, and summaries that show how much oil remains on the surface or becomes dispersed, as well as changes in viscosity, density, and water-in-oil content. Designed for spill responders, planners, and trainers, ADIOS supports operational decision-making and is commonly used alongside NOAA’s trajectory modeling tools during preparedness and real incidents. The software is developed and maintained by NOAA’s Office of Response and Restoration, Emergency Response Division, and is available at no cost.
Key capabilities:
- Rapid oil weathering predictions to inform early response actions
- Large, curated database of crude oils and refined products
- Simple scenario setup with environmental conditions as inputs
- Visual outputs and summaries to support countermeasure selection and timing
- Suitable for training, planning, and operational spill response
ADIOS is developed by NOAA. The most popular version of this product among our users is 2.0. The names of program executable files are adios.exe, Adios2.exe.
